Hurricane Preparedness Fair
Saturday June 29, 9am to 3pm

this page updated June 28, 2002

Amateur Radio will be on prominent display at the Raleigh Hurricane Preparedness Fair, sponsored by the Triangle Chapter of the American Red Cross and Lowes Home Improvement Warehouse.  The Fair will be in the parking lot of the Lowes store near Glenwood Ave. and Lynn Rd. in northwest Raleigh.  The official address is 4831 Grove Barton Rd.  The Fair runs from 9 AM to 3 PM.

Wake County ARES and Central Carolina SKYWARN will both have displays at the Fair, including operating HF and VHF stations

Help Wanted!

Wake County ARES plans to set up this stuff :

  • a "Field Day" type station in a screen tent with HF/VHF and possibly digital communications,
  • an 80 Meter dipole (strung between light poles),
  • a tril-band beam on an extention ladder "tower"
  • a display where visitors can fill out NTS Message Traffic forms for free delivery
  • posters and banners (download a pdf version of some of the posters- 250kB)
  • a vehicle demonstrating mobile Amateur Radio

We need help setting up the station, tents and antennas, operators for the station, "tour guides" and a tear-down crew. We are open to additional ideas and volunteers for equipment demonstrations.

Some late-night set-up time is available Friday night, but we think we can do it by starting early in the morning (6 AM, maybe a little earlier to string the antennas).

Gary KN4AQ and Jeff AC4ZO are planning to bring most of the equipment, but we're open to other "suppliers."  Keep in mind that we have somewhat limited space.  On the other hand, we will certainly have some last-minute needs that no one thought ot.

To volunteer, e-mail KN4AQ, or call 380-9944.  Let him know:

  • What shift you can work (including set-up and tear-down)
  • What job you'd like (OK to list "any" or more than one)
  • What additional equipment you can offer
