- Tom, N4TAB, made the following comments:
- Several participants in the ARES and Skywarn organizations have
passed at least the written element of the General Class license test.
Congratulations to them and keep up the good work!
- 14FEB2004 - Columbia, NC = Area 1,2,3 ARES/RACES Meeting.
Topics will include review of the post-hurricane
procedures and hardware and changes to be made.
There will also be a short 30 minute presentation on BPL,
Broadband over Power Lines. This is a digital technology which
threatens the very existance of HF communications.

Suspicious Packages:
- Follow guidelines in FEMA's
Are You Ready, Page 85. also see
Singapore's version.
Guidelines for packages leaking fluids or powders: from the
Singapore Civil Defense Force
- Cover with plastic or paper slowly as to not disperse agent or activate a device.
- Turn off HVAC system and fans in the building you are in.
- Secure the area. Evacuate rooms and or buildings. Lock doors.
- DECONtaminate yourself: Wash hands thoroughly with soap.
Remove clothes, and shower with antiseptic soap & shampoo
- Make list of individuals who may have been exposed.
Give to emergency responders.
- Seek professional medical attention immediately if any symptoms develop.

- Tom, N4TAB had these comments on the recent ice storm:
- Wake County EOC (and subsequently Wake ARES) was not activated
as the county had no significant power or comms outages.
- Orange County did have a brief ARES activation
- The NC Eastern Branch EOC in Kinston was also activated for a short time
to deal with a telephone system outage
- Be sure to check out the ready.gov website.
- Bob, WX4MMM listed these Skywarn training opportunities:
- Saturday, 21-FEB-2004 1300-1515: Advanced Spotter Training at the Cary Senior Center
in Bond Park.
- Sunday, 29-FEB-2004: Skywarn Dinner at China Buffet in Wake Forest
- Tuesday, 02-MAR-2004 1930: Basic Skywarn Training
